Finding Inspiration in Baby Loss Nurses and Community
Early this November, nurses, chaplains, support workers, bereaved parents and many others gathered to participate in The 19 Biennial International Perinatal Bereavement Conference in San Antonio Texas. It was my first time attending the conference and I was immediately blown away by the compassion AND passion of those that support parents and families before and after their baby dies. I got to know many nurses local to my area that work at the Grey Nuns, Misericordia Hospital, Sturgeon Hospital and The Royal Alex. It was also lovely connecting with nurses and support workers from all over the world; from New York, Seattle, California and as far as New Zealand.
I presented Healing through the Written Word and was honoured that additional chairs were needed at the back as the room was full. The response was tremendously positive and the hands-on activity seemed very meaningful for those attending with a few individuals shedding tears during the writing process. I love interacting with people in this way. It inspires and fuels me.
Despite the fact that I attended the conference to present a workshop, I left enriched in a soulful and educated way. I’m a busy girl, but after the conference I felt recharged in my own passion to help others. Plus, the experience gave me even more respect and appreciation for everyone who has a role to play in supporting those whose baby has died. It was such a gift to reflect on all this and I have to say I am brimming with gratitude.
