New Year’s Resolutions for the New Normal

Resolutions are tough. We envision the perfect version of ourselves and set goals of how to morph into that person. While others resolve never to make a New Year’s resolution because they know that they will most definitely break it.

I happen to like resolutions. Goals fuel me. Having a purpose becomes a motivating factor for me in moving forward with my life.

Some of the things I have learned about this ‘new normal,’ this life after the death of a child, in terms of making New Year’s resolutions include:

  1. Life is unpredictable and no matter our plans, we may head in an unanticipated direction.

  2. Being adaptable, flexible, and open are character traits that will serve us well.

  3. It is still better to hope and believe and make plans knowing that they may get changed or become obsolete rather than choosing fear.

  4. Imperfection is actually a gift.

  5. Life goes on.

So with those five points in mind, as I contemplate my life, my New Year’s resolutions include:

  • More quality time with my kids, husband, family and friends. (I’m all about quality time.)
  • Learn new recipes.
  • Maintain my fitness regime. 10,000 steps a day – thank you Fitbit, and Mom and Aaron who keep me accountable.
  • Make downtime a priority. Drink tea in the evenings. Stretch while watching reality TV. (And get on reality TV… Amazing Race, please call me! Lol)
  • And in terms of this ‘new normal,’ I resolve to take my love for Zachary and use it to help other people. That is my passion. Who knows what that will look like, I’m open, but I resolve to be willing and available.

As promised, here are the stockings I made for my kids. They are a great example of imperfect love. I did have to use my… what’s it called? The stitch cutter tool? I had to use that tool to “fix” a few issues along the way, but I am so proud of myself and am already looking forward to hanging these stockings next Christmas.

I hope everyone is having a good holiday season. If anyone is lonely or needing to talk, comment below or send me an email. I’m always happy to listen.

So… what are your New Year’s resolutions? (Let’s cheer each other on!)

Hugs,

Alexis Marie
